Before you get in

The basics every Dublin sea swimmer knows.

  • Respect cold water shockThe first minute takes your breath. Get in slowly, float and let your breathing settle before you swim. Never jump in cold.
  • Swim with a buddyGo with someone, or at least tell someone where you are and when you'll be back.
  • Use a bright tow floatBoats, kayaks and paddle boards can see you, and you have something to hold if you need a rest.
  • Check the tide and stay within your limitsKnow whether it's coming in or going out, plan your exit, and keep close to shore.

Lifeguard season

Runs 1 June – 15 September

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown beaches, per dlrcoco.ie. It's over for this year, so there are no lifeguards on duty until it starts again in June. Other councils' dates (for example Dublin City Council at Dollymount) can differ, so check locally: dublincity.ie.

Not official safety advice. This page is a convenience. Tide times are predictions and temperatures are estimates or offshore readings, not measured at the spot. Check conditions yourself and follow lifeguard and council guidance.
